VMware Academic Program [VMAP]
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of summer 2024, Broadcom has indicated its intention to discontinue the VMWare academic program entitlement. As a result UBC will not be renewing the VMAP subscription for 2024-2025 academic year.
VMware Desktop Hypervisor products Fusion and Workstation are used to run virtual machines on Windows, Linux and Mac computers. They give users the ability to quickly and easily build “local virtual” environments to install other operating systems, learn about technology, build and test software, complex systems, browsers, apps, games, and more.
The VMware Academic Program was previously created to support the use of virtualization applications in teaching and research and provided software for personal use, whether as part of STEM classes, in research projects, or for gaining hands-on experience with VMware products. The program costs were funded by UBCO IT and enabled UBCO based users to request licenses at no cost to the end user.
As of May 2024, with the integration of Fusion and Workstation into Broadcom, VMware’s Fusion Pro and Workstation Pro is now free for personal use. This means that everyday users who want a virtual lab on their Mac, Windows or Linux computer can do so for free simply by registering and downloading the latest build from the new download portal located at support.broadcom.com.
