With Earth Day around the corner on April 22, 2024, UBC IT is shedding light on some of the environmental impacts of current and immerging technologies we utilize every day. This week we’re talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Hidden Costs: The Environmental Impact of AI Technologies
How to Upgrade to Office 2021
In alignment with UBC’s strategic plan to enable collaboration across the university and within our greater community, UBC will be implementing Microsoft 365 (M365), a cloud service that combines the commonly used Office apps (e.g., Word, PowerPoint and Excel) with collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and OneDrive. To prepare for this migration to M365, all devices should be using Office 2021. Learn more about the project to move UBC to M365.
Most newer CRP devices (less than 4 years old) or those recently upgraded, likely are already using Office 2021. However devices older than 4 years, or department owned devices which are not managed and supported by UBCO IT, should check their Office version and update as needed.
The guide linked HERE outlines the steps to:
- Confirm your current Office version, and
- Install Office 2021 from the Software Centre on your computer if required
If you encounter any problems with the installation, or have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Desktop Support team by submitting a ticket in the UBC Self-Service Portal.
Zoom video retention policy postponed and recordings to be stored in Kaltura
You were previously informed that the new Zoom video retention policy would come into effect on March 31, 2024. That is no longer the case, as the policy rollout date is being postponed. Zoom videos that are a year older or more will not be deleted on March 31 and links to Zoom videos will continue to work past that date.
UBC IT at BCNET Connect 2024: A Look into AI/Machine Learning through the Cybersecurity Lens
To learn about their upcoming presentation at BCNET Connect 2024, we recently met with UBC IT cybersecurity experts Scott Baker and Kevin Radford to explore how they are delving into the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, shedding light on both its potential and the accompanying challenges.
Windows 11 Update Available for Managed IT Devices
Windows 11 is now available as an optional update in the Software Center on all Staff, Faculty and Research workstations that are compatible with Windows 11.
The upgrade process will take approximately 2 hours and can be downloaded and installed in the background while you continue to work. For the upgrade to be applied to your device, you will need to restart your computer. The restart process will take an additional 10-15 minutes.
If you don’t see the upgrade option in the Software Center, your workstation may not be compatible with Windows 11 or is not considered an IT Managed Device.
At a future date, the upgrade will become mandatory for all compatible workstations.
Please contact IT Services through a ticket via the UBC Self-Service Portal as support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025.
