Install the iPrint Client

The iPrint client only needs to be installed onto your workstation once. Click your operating system below for detailed installation instructions.

Regardless of operating system, your system must be clean of any viruses or malware and running up-to-date anti-virus software.

Windows users: Perform a Panda ActiveScan to ensure your system is clean.

Windows

Supported iPrint Client Platforms

  • Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 or later (XP Home is not supported)
  • Windows 2000 service pack 4
  • Windows Vista (student printers only)
  • Windows 7

Supported Web Browsers

  • Firefox 2.0 or later
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later

Other Requirements

  • Your web browser must have JavaScript Enabled.
  • You must be logged into your workstation with Administrator-level rights.
  • You must be connected to the UBC O network via either a wired connection or via UBC O Secure wireless.

NOTE: The iPrint Client for Windows uses ActiveX controls when using Internet Explorer. By default, Internet Explorer’s “Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins” are enabled. If this has been changed, you need to re-enable it for iPrint to work correctly. This setting is found in Tools > Internet Options > Security > Local Intranet > Custom Level.

Installation Instructions

  1. Install iPrint Client to download the installer.
  2. Save the nipp.exe file to your local hard drive.
  3. Open the file from that location. (The default location is often your Desktop.)
  4. The install is “silent” – if there are no errors, the client installed successfully.
  5. Exit and restart all instances of your web browser.

NOTE: If you are installing iPrint on Windows 7 and receive “The iPrint client is not installed” or “Run as Administrator” messages, please see this article for solutions.

Step 2: Search and Install Printers

Macintosh

  • MacOS 10.7 and higher
  • Chrome or Mozilla-based Web browser (Firefox)

  2. Once the file finishes downloading, open the file from the desktop. Be sure to close down the Printer Set-up Utility before proceeding.
  3. Open the iPrint.pkg file.
  4. Follow the install instructions.
  5. Exit and restart all instances of your web browser before installing printers.

Step 2: Search and Install Printers

Linux

iPrint Client Requirements

  • Novell Linux Desktop 9.x, SUSE® 9.2 Professional, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 10.x, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3.
IMPORTANT: To install the client, you must have the root password or rights as root.
  • Firefox 2.0 or later

NOTE: If the iPrint server is busy when your installed printer attempts to communicate, CUPS moves the printer into an error state and holds all print jobs. To release print jobs, use the printer management utility to restart the printer.

Installation Instructions

  1. Install iPrint Client to download the installer.
  2. When prompted, save the iPrint Client RPM to your desktop or home directory.
  3. Install the iPrint Client RPM by double-clicking the RPM. If a file association for the RPM does not exist, use an RPM installer program. This is the step where you require the root password or rights as root.
  4. (Conditional – openSUSE 10.2/10.3 only)
Modify your CUPS configuration file (/etc/cups/cupsd.conf). Find this section:

    <Limit Pause-Printer Resume-Printer Set-Printer-Attributes
    Enable-Printer Disable-Printer Pause-Printer-After-Current-Job
    Hold-New-Jobs Release-Held-New-Jobs Deactivate-Printer Activate-Printer
    Restart-Printer Shutdown-Printer Startup-Printer Promote-Job
    Schedule-Job-After CUPS-Add-Printer CUPS-Delete-Printer CUPS-Add-Class
    CUPS-Delete-Class CUPS-Accept-Jobs CUPS-Reject-Jobs
    CUPS-Set-Default>
          AuthType Basic
    Require user @SYSTEM
      Order deny,allow
    </Limit>

Insert a “#” in front of the directives “Authtype Basic” and “Require user @SYSTEM”. When you are done the section should like like this:

    <Limit Pause-Printer Resume-Printer Set-Printer-Attributes
    Enable-Printer Disable-Printer Pause-Printer-After-Current-Job
    Hold-New-Jobs Release-Held-New-Jobs Deactivate-Printer Activate-Printer
    Restart-Printer Shutdown-Printer Startup-Printer Promote-Job
    Schedule-Job-After CUPS-Add-Printer CUPS-Delete-Printer CUPS-Add-Class
    CUPS-Delete-Class CUPS-Accept-Jobs CUPS-Reject-Jobs
    CUPS-Set-Default>
      # AuthType Basic
      # Require user @SYSTEM
      Order deny,allow
    </Limit>

  5. (Conditional – for GNOME users only)
Set up the iprint-listener to run when you login:

    1. On the GNOME desktop, click System > Personal Settings.
    2. Under the System section, click Sessions.
    3. Click Startup Programs > Add.
    4. For the Startup Command, enter /opt/novell/iprint/bin/iprint-listener.
    5. Click OK > Close. The next time you log in, iprint-listener is automatically loaded.
  6. Restart your computer. This will ensure that CUPS, iprint-listener, iprint client and the Firefox iprint plugin are properly loaded.

You are now ready to proceed to finding, selecting and installing iPrint printers.
